Dr. Margaret Ebunoluwa "Maggie" Aderin-Pocock is a name synonymous with scientific excellence, communication, and a passionate commitment to inspiring future generations of scientists. Born on March 9, 1968, in London to Nigerian parents, her journey through the realms of space science and education is nothing short of remarkable.

A Stellar Career in Space Science

Dr. Aderin-Pocock's career has spanned a wide range of projects, from private industry ventures to government contracts and academic research. Her professional journey began at the Ministry of Defence and the Defence Evaluation and Research Agency, where she contributed to missile warning systems. She later worked on the development of instruments for landmine detection, showcasing her versatility and expertise.

Returning to Imperial College London in 1999 with the support of a Science and Technology Facilities Council scholarship, she joined the team working on the high-resolution spectrograph for the Gemini telescope in Chile. This instrument delves into the heart of stars, converting collected light into a spectrum of colors for in-depth analysis, unraveling the mysteries of celestial bodies located billions of kilometers away.

Dr. Aderin-Pocock also played a pivotal role as the lead researcher for optical instrumentation at Astrium, where she contributed to satellite projects like Éole. This satellite aims to measure wind speeds, playing a crucial role in climate change research.

A Passion for Science Communication

Beyond her scientific achievements, Dr. Aderin-Pocock is a true advocate for science communication. She founded her own company, Science Innovation Ltd, with a mission to ignite curiosity about space science and technology among children and adults worldwide.

Her commitment to inspiring future scientists is unwavering. Dr. Aderin-Pocock has spoken to approximately 25,000 children, many in urban schools, sharing her personal journey and debunking myths surrounding careers in science, class, and gender.

She initiated the "Universe Tours" program, designed to introduce people of all ages to the wonders of space. Additionally, she contributes to youth science activities as a celebrity judge in the national Science + Engineering competition, held annually at the Big Bang Fair.

Awards and Honors

Dr. Aderin-Pocock's outstanding contributions have garnered numerous awards and recognitions, including the prestigious UK Power List, where she was listed as one of the top 10 influential Black Britons. Her work has also been recognized with the "Out of the Box Thinking Award" from the Yale Center for Dyslexia, highlighting her innovative approach to science education and communication.
